ISSUE: Can you trust that the Real Real stores properly authenticate luxury items?

DISCUSSION:  On November 12, 2021, The Real Real reached a settlement for $11 million to resolve a class action lawsuit brought by shareholders. 

The case centered on the luxury resale platform's authentication claims following widespread reports that the luxury resale platform’s core value proposition—genuine, authenticated premium items—was too good to be true. 

Plaintiff and shareholder Michael Sanders filed an amendment to a class action lawsuit in Northern California’s U.S. District Court, alleging that The Real Real's authentication process "fell far short of its description," and investors were hurt as details of the process leaked out.

The suit was filed after a #CNBC investigation revealed that the Real Real improperly tasking low tier employees with authenticating luxury items after little to no real training.

RULE: Since no one wants to unwittingly purchase counterfeit items, do not rely on third party retailers to authenticate your luxury items. Learn how to authenticate luxury items for yourself.
